The name "Mausoleum" was established by the Romans upon seeing the impressive tomb erected at Halicarnassus in the third century B.C., honoring King Mausolus of a nation then known as Caria (part of Asia Minor today). The tomb was judged one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World. This architectural influence of the mausoleum has been preserved to the present time.
